The Slack Evaporator is useful when you have certain tasks that are scheduled earlier than desired simply because they have few or no predecessors that constrain their start and finish date.  This tool schedules a task based on when its successor starts rather than when its predecessor finishes.  Microsoft Project includes a task dependency type named "As Late as Possible" (ALAP) but the Slack evaporator does not use that method to reschedule tasks.  An ALAP task constraint will often move a task beyond the start date of its successor since it uses Total Slack in its calculation whereas the SSI Slack Evaporator uses Free Slack.

Select a task or task and search text strings for values to replace.  This tool does not work for calculated and non-text fields in a project.

A "Snapshot" is a term introduced by Structured Solutions Inc. and described in the NDIA's Planning and Scheduling Guide (PASEG) in section 10.4.5 Current Execution Index (CEI).  A Snapshot is a just a copy of current start and finish dates and is the same as Setting an Interim baseline using Set Baseline / Set interim plan from the Schedule group of the Project menu in Microsoft Project.

 

A Schedule Snapshot is useful for comparing scheduled start and finish dates at the beginning of a period verses updated dates at the end of the period.  This comparison would show periodic schedule variances whereas a Baseline date comparison would show cumulative schedule variances.  Periodic schedule variances are used to determine a metric named Current Execution Index or CEI.

 

SSI's Schedule Snapshot tool may provide easier ability to set Snapshots and includes tools to display snapshot dates in the Gantt chart.  Using Microsoft Project's version is prone to inadvertently overwriting your official baseline since its form opens with Set baseline as its default state.

Select a task or group of tasks and quickly add convert the task name case to "Proper".  Proper case capitalizes the first word and any proper noun in a task name. 

 

For example: if "deliver draft of the ICD" in the name field becomes "Deliver Draft of the ICD"
